Hidden Face of Globalization- Documentary

Hidden face of globalization documentary represents women who work in a clothing factory of the developing countries. It Portrays how women are made to work for 20 hours a day for the whole month with only two days off of work. Their work is on sewing garments and ship off to America, they are supervised by men. Women are subjected to abuse and means of control for profit. The film claims that in developing countries multinational corporations have “almost whipped out of cost of labour” by paying women less than the 11 cents. Though the salary is low they are bound to continue thier job at the factories to uphold their domestic lives.

Its interesting that globalization has created factory jobs for domestic goods manufacture such as clothing, shoes etc for outside market at the expense of the quality of life of women of developing countries. The film also claims that women workers often work for 5-6 hours of overtime at night, but they do not get their wages for the extra work, if asked they are beaten and attacked. The elderly women were replaced with younger ones as they fail to meet the production. The film shows the hidden power of patriarchy and how capitalism targets the domestic household to force women into low pay labour.

The film also shows that the workers quarters have very poor infrastructure, which are prone to floods during rainy season. They had share water pump, gas stove with 3 or 4 burners, Toilets. They are was no privacy, she had to bathe with her clothes on. They also avoid going to doctors if they fall ill, as they cannot afford the treatment. So these women working in garments have never seen a movie, never gone on vacation etc. The film shows that if the women could earn 34 cents a day, they would get out of the poverty, with decent meal a day.
