Chapter 1 Vocabulary
Old World= Europe and the surrounding countries.
New World= newly founded countries in the Americas.
Appalachian Mountains= A mountain range in the eastern united states created by the continuous shifting and folding of earth’s crust.
Tidewater Region= A narrow eastern coastal plain creased with river valleys.
Rocky Mountains=A mountain range in the western united states formed by continental plates.
Great Lakes=the melting of glaciers and the Canadian Shield formed lakes in the Northern United states and Canada.
Missouri- Mississippi- Ohio River System=Formed to drain the area between the Appalachian and Rocky Mountains.
Land Bridge= huge area of land that connected Europe and the Americas during the ice age 35,000 years ago.
Maize= A type of Indian corn that fed lots of people in Central America.
Aztecs= an Indian civilization that would make human sacrifices to their gods.
Incas= A Indian civilianization located in Peru that was wiped out by Francisco Pizarro
Pueblo= Pueblo is Spanish for village and was a group of people that used an irrigation system to water their crops.
Mound Builders= Native Americans of the Ohio River valley that planted corn to survive.
Three-sister Farming= the three main crops of Native American groups. The crops are maize, beans, and squash.
Cherokee= A Native American tribe that was densely populated due to three-sister farming.
Iroquois= Developed a political and organizational skills to sustain a large military alliance that threatened its neighbors.
Vinland= A place rich with wild grapes in Newfoundland that was founded by Scandinavians.
Crusaders= Christians that fought to take back the holy land from the Muslims. Though unsuccessful they got a taste for exotic delights.
Venice= Place in Italy that had merchants that sold luxuries for lots of money.
Genoa= Also had merchants that sold goods which made European consumers eager to have more.
