To compare and contrast the Army Problem Solving Process (APSP) with the Rapid Decision Making and Synchronization Process (RDSP) we must first have a base understanding of what the two processes are. The APSP is the foundation for the military decision making process, it consist of a seven step process. It gives a leader a logical template to identify the problem and then walk the problem through the steps until the leader is able to make and implement a decision. On the other the RDSP is a five step technique that is used, typically during the execution phase when time is critical in the decision making process.

In both processes, they provide the leader a process by which to make an informed and effective decision. Additionally both procedures use a template of certain steps in order to come to a decision, the seven step APSP or the five step RDSP. Many of the decisions made with RDSP are made mentally as opposed to written, as are the decisions made using the APSP. In both processes, the final step is implementation. The leader can accomplish both the APSP and the RDSP without a staff. Lastly, when faced with an obstacle that makes it difficult to reach the desired goal or the end state both procedures are used.

In contrast, the leader typically uses the RDSP when timing is more important than the process. The APSP is used throughout the Military Decision Making Process (MDMP) however, the RDSP is typically used during the execution phase. Additionally the RDSP facilitates the synchronization as while as enabling a decision. The APSP applies to all activities in the Army not just operations which is the case with the RDSP. To close it out, the RDSP should be a battle drill for both current operations cells and future operation cells.
