The Black Experience in Post Civil War America” Please respond to the following:

Reconstruction was a time of political upheaval, resentment between the North and the South, and government and social uncertainty about how to ensure freedom and equality for newly freed slaves. It could be easy to lose the perspective of America’s newest citizens at this time. It is likely that not all former slaves fared the same in the transition. Students will respond to the following:

Describe some of the disadvantages that freed slaves had as they tried to blend into mainstream society.

Some of the disadvantages of the freed blacks were joyful they were free but they weren’t liking it because of the south states had passed these laws that limited what they can and can't do and it was basically making them slaves again. they had to be labors of the whites, have a note to go into town, if they run-away they will either be imprisoned or killed, and so much more it's just so hard on them just because of their skin color which is prejudge.

Explain factors that could cause some former slaves to succeed while others would have great difficulty the rest of their lives.

Many believed the rumor that each slave would get "40 acres and a mule" to start their own farms. Most blacks and many whites could not afford to buy land on their own. So a new business of Southern agriculture started called - sharecropping. This meant the farmer farmed land owned by someone else, and the two shared profits. In actual fact, most sharecroppers, both black and white, became slaves to debt. By 1900m 70% of the land was farmed by renters, so that few farmers could succeed, no matter how hard they worked. Today, 145 years after reconstruction started, many black farmers are fighting for their land that was taken from them during the Great Depression.
