Ghana

Kwame Nkrumah

Kwame Nkrumah was a very influential figure in Ghana. Kwame was born in Nkroful, Gold Coast(Ghana), on September 21, 1909. Kofi Ngohloma and Elizabeth Nyanibah are his parents.1 Nkrumah was involved in alot of major things that happened in Ghana, the main, being the Leader when the Gold Coast, or Ghana, gained its independence. Of all the leaders that have been through Ghana, i would say that Nkrumah is one of the most important and prestigious leaders. I mean come on, he helped them become a independent state that is known today as being one of the most politically and economically sound countries.

"He began in 1935 when he received a BA from Lincoln University in Pennsylvania in 1939. He went on to earn a Master of Science in Education from the University of Pennsylvania in 1942 and a Master of Art in Philosophy in 1945."2 In 1945, he was also voted most outstanding professor of the year by "The Lincolnian".3 In the same year, he joined up with George Padmore and they both organized the Sixth Pan African Congress is Manchester, England. After organizing this organaztion. he became vice president of the West African Student Union. "He was also the leader of The Circle, a secret organization dedicated to the unity and independence of West Africa, in its struggle to create and maintain a union of African Socialist Republics."4 Shortly after this, Kwame wrote his first book with the title, Toward Colonial Freedom. In December of 1947, Kwame returned to the Gold Coast(Ghana) to be the secretary of the UGCC, or the United Gold Coast Convention. In 1948, him and some other members of the UGCC, known kater as the "Big Six", were detained following some colony disturbances.5 In 1949, Kwame made a huge move and declared a Positive Action to demand independence. This all led up to Kwame being arrested, due to riots that were happening because of the Positive Action declaration. There was more to come after this.
