As the faculty member, what would be your course of action towards the student?

I would talk to the student in order to ascertain whether the student has plagiarized. If the student did was it intentionally or unintentionally. I feel it is important to respect the student’s right. The student may not have plagiarized intentionally and may suggest a solution before I would have to take further action. If I was determined that the student was very likely did commit plagiarism after I have talked to the student, I would have to give the student a failing grade on the paper if it was the first time it has happened.

How would you describe to the student why plagiarism is dishonest?

I would tell the student that plagiarism is like stealing the words or thoughts of another author. I would compare it to theft to the unauthorized taking of property. I would tell the student of different ways on how his/her work might be dishonest. Such as no giving credit to the author, not using quotation marks. I would explain to the student that plagiarism’s effects are damaging to his/her academic career and can create serious legal problems.

What other types of behavior should you mention to the student that fall under academic dishonest guidelines?

1: self-plagiarism- which is the submission of work that has been prepared for a different course without fair citation of the original work and prior approval of faculty.

2: fabrication- which is falsification or invention of any information, citation, data, or document.

3: Unauthorized Assistance- the use of materials or information not authorized by faculty member.

I would also let the student know where he/she can read about the ones I have mentions plus other ones that are on the list. Plus let the student know that in there it is explained what could happen...
