Freud’s Psychodynamic Theory

Describe a situation in your own life when you have felt the competing forces of the id, ego, and superego at work. What was the end result of this conflict? Did your id win? Why or why not? Think of an additional example to illustrate where this conflict may be at work in your chosen field of study?

Conclude with a brief discussion as to whether or not you believe that Freud was correct in his views on the importance of the unconscious mind, or our more animalistic drives and impulses. Do you agree with Freud that human beings really are no better than animals when it comes to what motivates our behavior? Why or why not?

One incident I recall is after being on the road for 15 days straight working a min. of 12 hour shift, when I returned to the office I was set to go on vacation. In the midst of getting prepared for vacation for another 14 days, my supervisor and I got into a disagreement about me leaving a couple of hours earlier. So as result on my return my supervisor decided to write me up for in-subornation indicating I was hostile and aggressive.

My first reaction, my id, was to go off. Not because of the write up however due to the choice of words and how the write-up was presented. My ego told her honestly; if I was aggressive and hostile in the previous encounter believe me I would have been fired prior to be returning the office. My superego, thank her for her time and walked away. As a result my superego also took the bigger route approached my manager and insisted that this incident be addressed and it was not my fault her ego was bruised a little bit by the encounter. I further explained that her behavior toward me which warrant my reaction; indicated that if I was to be written up for hostile and aggressive behavior she needed to as well.
