Effective Police Supervision…What I Would Do

While it is an undisputed fact that things need to be handled on the job, there is always more than one way to handle things. Every individual has a method in which they may deal with the variety of situations that can occur. When it comes to effective police supervision, managers can employ a plethora of options when dealing with subordinates. The trick is to find the most productive technique to accomplish that goal and keeping in mind that people need to be dealt with on an individual basis. After viewing the case study Sergeant George Welsh, I will explain what I would do, if I were in his position.

Understanding the difficulty, I would explore several different motivational techniques, but, also keeping in mind that every situation is different, and should be handled accordingly. The best efforts of motivation will revolve around what is most important to the employee (Magee, 2001-2013). One such technique is empowerment. When employees are given more responsibility and the authority to make some of the decisions, it gives them a sense of responsibility. When they have an objective to look forward to, misplaced energy is redirected, from negativity, to the accomplishment of specified goals.

Another effective strategy is allowing employees to express their creativity and to flex their innovational prowess (Magee, 2001-2013). Far too often, an idea or suggestion coming from a subordinate is rebuffed. I believe that anyone who has worked a position for any length of time should be able to make suggestion or offer ideas to increase productivity. These employees have a level of experience that is virtually unmatched, and should be able to incorporate valuable insight.
