Self-Reflection Exercise # 1: Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence is a very important aspect to take into consideration in any organization. Emotional intelligence varies from each individual as everyone has their own predetermined personalities and characteristic. According to the textbook Organizational Behaviour: concepts, controversies, and applications, “emotional intelligence is an assortment of noncognitive skills, capabilities, and competencies that influence a person’s ability to succeed in coping with environmental demands and pressures” (Langton, Robbins, Judge & Breward, 2012, pg. 77). With that being said, it can be very crucial for an employer within an organization to understand and identify each individual’s emotional intelligence as it can negatively or positively affect the organization as a whole.

First off, a commonly used method to evaluate one’s emotional intelligence is in a form of a test with a series of questions pertaining to emotional intelligence. This test determines whether or not an individual possesses above average or below average emotional intelligence skills. I for one have under gone the emotional intelligence test several times and was very surprised on how accurate the results were. My results indicated that I had an above average score which in turn meant that I was good at dealing with social or emotional conflicts, feelings, and dealing with emotional situations. In addition, a similar type of emotional intelligence would often result in a positive scenario when dealing with conflict in an organization as emotions do not cloud judgment.
