Impact of Social Networking Sites Usage on Student’s Academic Performance in Pakistan

Abstract

Purpose – This research paper examines the impact of the usage of social networking sites (SNS) on the academic performance of the students in universities. The impact has been studied in relation to three variables acting as moderators to the usage of social networking sites which in turn helps to enquire the variation of academic performance of the students regarding that usage. The Independent variable is the SNS usage, the mediator is the Technology.

Methodology – A sample of 300 students was chosen from different universities of Pakistan using convenience sampling technique. The students belonged to different disciplines i.e. Management, Arts or Engineering. The data was collected using questionnaires. The data was analyzed using Correlation and regression.

Results – As per findings of the study, students with high usage and access to social networking sites have low academic performance than the students with low usage and access.

Introduction

The work of Murphy et al. (1997) states that communication is a critical part of every day to day activity whether the activity is some industrial work, some office work, home chores or it might be just communication. Technology is playing a vital role in making the communication easier and more efficient every passing minute. One of the gifts of technological advancement towards communication is the social media over internet, commonly known as Social Networking Sites. Boyd and Ellison (2007) define Social Networking Websites as web-based services that allow individuals to construct a public/semi-public profile within a limited system that entertains a list of other users with whom they share a connection and view and traverse their list of connections and those made by others within the very same system.
