The Subjection of Women

In The Subjection of Women, John Stuart Mill argues that women are not supposed to be subordinated to men. He said the subordination takes place in social relationships through putting up of social and legal inequalities for women. According to Mill, “the patriarchal society has activities and policies that make women as men’s subjects in marriage” (Mill 30). He argues that these policies are not supposed to have a place in the society since men and women are supposed to be equal partners in marriage . Mill argument on good marriages is based on equality and treatment of men and women as people who have the same intellectual ability. Marriage should be about people who come together jointly to live with equal rights in marriages.

In his view, “an ideal marriage is characterized by two people coming together in marriage with the same opinions about each other”. Furthermore, Mill concept of an idyllic marriage is when a wife and a husband have identical purposes that are a product of the cultivated faculties of two persons. Besides, Mill was an advent supporter of marriages in which a man and woman cultivate a relationship that is based on equality in all aspects of their relationships. An ultimate marriage is one characterized by spouses exerting similarity in powers through equitable decision making and having a mutual superiority between them

Mill postulated that, an ideal marriage is typified by egalitarianism. It is able to bring out privileges for the partners to enjoy the luxury of looking up for one another. “An ideal marriage provides equal opportunities for a man and a woman to be leaders in the marriage context” (Mill 45).
