Evaluation of a Human Services Program

“Every 53 minutes on average, someone gets killed in a drunk driving crash. Every 90 seconds, someone gets injured because of this entirely preventable crime In 2011, 9,878 people were killed and approximately 315,000 were injured because of a drunk driver, or a driver under the influence of medication, legal or illegal” (Mothers Against Drunk Driving, 2013). “Each crash, each death, each injury effects not only the person in the crash, but also the family, friends, classmates, coworkers, and more” (Mothers Against Drunk Driving, 2013). This I know is true from personal experience.

How the Program was Designed

Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD) is an organization that was founded on September 5th 1980, by a lady named Candace “Candy” Lightner. Candy founded this organization in Fair Oaks, Californian after her 13-year-old daughter Cari, was killed by a drunk driver. The drunk driver was out on bail, from another drunk driving hit and run. This was the driver’s fifth Driving Under the Influence (DUI) charge in the last four years.

In October 1st 1980, Camdy, joined forces with Cindy Lamb, who lived in Maryland. Cindy and Candy united the east and west coast, and together they took their stories to Washington D.C. and held the first ever national conference. This national conference was the first of many more to come.

Cindy and her daughter Laura were hit by a drunk driver when they were on the way to the grocery store. This was the drivers fifth DUI. Laura was only five months old. Laura, injured severely became the youngest baby in the nation to become a quadriplegic. Laura was not expected to live past 72 hours, but she did. Laura lived for seven years, she died on March 12th 1986.
