Letter to Reagan Presidential Library

Dear Ronald Reagan Presidential Library,

Some Americans believe that Ronald Reagan was one of the greatest presidents of the United States. I am one of these Americans. President Reagan helped to turn this country around after the unfortunate times that President Carter had placed us in. He was able to end the Cold War. He also re-established the United States as a military superpower. He turned this nation’s economy completely around with Reaganomics. These are merely a few of the many great things that President Reagan was able to do for this country.

After many decades of fear within American hearts, President Reagan was able bring relief to the minds of the citizens. He was able to do so by reversing détente and standing strong against the Soviet Union. He never gave up in pushing his Strategic Defensive Initiative and he gave aid to the rebels that battled against Soviet-backed communist from Nicaragua to Angola. He also helped modern day Germany, by telling Mikhail Gorbachev to “tear down this wall” in Berlin. (Cox, 2009) Though the Cold War had ended, America still needed to be protected.

The military was diminished during the Carter years, but Reagan reversed that by rebuilding the armed forces. His Peace through Strength philosophy was manifested in many different ways. The B-1 bomber program that Carter canceled was restarted. He started production of the MX missile. He pushed NATO to deploy Pershing missiles in West Germany. He increased defense spending by more than 40%, increased troop levels, and even got much-needed space parts into the pipeline.
