According to the document, The Declaration of Independence, by Thomas Jefferson," All men are created equal ... they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights..." This is a popular phrase that represents our country as a whole. Freedom of speech is endowed to each citizen in this country. The U.S is an amazing country because of that privilege and right to speak your own mind. Even though this country is filled with opportunity and liberty, it is difficult to have a voice in such a free country.

Elizabeth Cady Stanton is a great example of an American citizen who didn't have a voice , at first, in the U.S. She was a leader in the American women's rights movement. In her document, Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions, Stanton wrote ,"He has made her, if married, in the eye of the law, civilly dead." Stanton refers to being unable to be your own person when married because the man has control and "authority". In that time period women weren't able to be fully independent, vote, or have a voice against men. The fact that Stanton stood up to the gov't and men in general, made the document a lot more effective. Many women were too afraid to speak up and break free from societies thoughts of women having no choice. Elizabeth Stanton wanted the respect that women deserved but the process wasn't easy. The women at the time were the type that had no back-bone and stayed quite and let themselves get stomped on. Stanton was a great leader because she let them know they didn't have to take it any longer and that change was coming. "In the covenant of marriage, she is compelled to promise obedience to her husband, he becoming, to all intents and purposes, her master - the law giving him power to deprive of her liberty, and to administer chastisement."
