1. Describe the different types of skin cancers, including the type of cells they arise from and the appearance of the lesions.

|As per our text, although there are numerous types of skin tumors, or neoplasms, of which most are benign (Marieb, p. 126), there |

|are three cancerous neoplasms. The three types of skin cancer include basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and malignant|

|melanoma, all of which are malignant to varying degrees. |

|“Basal cell carcinoma … is the least malignant and most common…” (Marieb p. 126). As would be implied by its name, it comes from |

|the stratum basale layer of the skin which is found in and at the very base of the epidermis, just above the dermis layer of skin. |

|The stratum basale cells are most likely to be effected by the areas of the body that are most exposed to the sun (UVA/UVB rays), |

|such as the face, neck, ears, and nose. This cancer is often noticed by the observation of a small shiny bump, but can also just |

|look like open soars or red patches that never seem to scab over and heal. Although this cancer is malignant it is rare for it to|

|spread to other parts of the body away from the original site of the tumor. (The Skin Cancer Foundation, 2013) |
