Internet Use

Internet is an important tools and ubiquitous in modern business today. When used properly, it can be and extremely efficient and highly effective productivity enhancer. While most employees are not likely to abuse their internet privilege at work; however, some are amazed into time-wasting surfing that leaves the company with a productivity decrease by 2.5%. I’m here today to persuade you guys to have a written company policy that covers computer and Internet use.

Internet Misuse

Without a doubt, internet has many advantages to offer to the company’s operations. The electronic email allows instantaneous communication within the organization. Employees can keep track of their competition by using search engines. The company also saves cost for the operations because internet facilitates efficient transfer of data and automation of human tasks. However, using the company time to visit non-business sites can both security and productivity of the company.

If we have twelve (12) out of 65 employees spending and between ten (10) and an hour each day surfing non work-related sites and we factor in how much a work hour costs the company, and factor it in over a long period of time, the cost can be significant. Obviously some types of internet use are more bandwidth-hungry than others. Downloading music files or large graphics, streaming video and online games-playing are all major culprit.

As a result, the demand for monitoring and blocking tools to keep employees focused on their jobs is required; however, it needs to be employed in an ethical manner. In other words, Internet monitoring should some basic rules that assure its proper application in the manner, for the correct reasons.
