In the Campbell & Nori (2007) article, the authors discuss data trends in the marketplace and Microsoft¿s corresponding initiatives to keep their products up-to-date. Discuss one trend and an example of how Microsoft added functionality to the SQL server to keep products aligned with the trend.

One data trend that is developing is that of device and client trends. This means that devices are improving with an ever increasing rate of speed and the smart phones of tomorrow will be as good as the desktops of yesterday. This allows for an ever increasing access to data and information in databases that needs to be addressed.

The first part of it is that devices are becoming more and more mobile. An employee for the electric company used to have to read meters by hand and enter information in paper ledgers that were eventually transcribed to computers back at the home office. Now, an employee can carry a device that allows the meter to be read and the information submitted automatically to the home office. This allows for greater accuracy and mobility for both the workers in the field and those in the office. Applications that work on mobile devices allow access to the database and bring the information both into the field and back into the office. Microsoft is adding to functionality by specifically targeting mobile devices. Not mentioned in the article is the recent proliferation of tablets. These will likely gain a great usage for mobile business people with need to access and use Wi-Fi to send in information accumulated during the day’s work.

This leads into streaming which is bringing the information to the device in manageable increments. This allows updates to the database as well as information to pass back to the worker in the field. Or, if otherwise desired, the company could effectively use an occasionally connected method. This would impart information to the mobile device in smaller, more management bits and then be accessible even if not connected....
