Thought Process:-

Thomas Green is very bright and ambitious account executive. He had a great rapport with clients and had ability to bring fresh perspective. These qualities helped him to get direct promotion to senior market specialist position. He was lacking important strategic skills and managerial experience required for the new position.

As Vice President McDonald should have imparted some training to Green before promoting him. She did not take Davis, the Marketing Director, into confidence for her decision. As Davis did not like the work style and attitude of Green, there was lack of good communication between them.

As per the case, Thomas Green has the best career opportunity at this company. He has already impressed McDonald with his performance in the earlier 4 months. Green should put sincere effort to build working relationship with Davis. He should accept his lack of experience and skills and should display willingness to learn. He should leave his ego and consult Davis for immediate sales goals of the company. He should try to get confidence of McDonald and Davis for his long term software project plan.

In his letter to McDonald he need not mention anything about the promotion decision. Though he feels that Davis’s forecast are overstated, he should accept that he might be wrong. Whatever points Davis has raised in his review are ultimately for the good of Green’s long term career.

He should request McDonald to sponsor managerial and strategic skills training for him. He should try his best to respect Davis’s job responsibility and authority.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to explain my perspective on recent performance.

I had meetings and constructive discussion with Frank Davis on this subject. I definitely agree to mistakes and shortcomings on my part and will sincerely try to rectify those.
