Question 1

Self :How many members do you have in your library?

Librarian :We have around 900 subscribers borrowing books from this library. But the members of the staff also rent books. So, this number may rise up to 1000 members.

Question 2

Self :How many books are there in your library?

Librarian :There are about 9 000 to 10 000 books in all. These include the encyclopedias, dictionaries, fictions, novels, references, etc. Each year we buy some 500 more books in order to keep in touch with the market and new publications. Thus providing up-to-date material to our students.

Question 3

Self :What information do you keep on the members?

Librarian : We normally record the surname, name, and address and phone number. But for the students we also record their responsible parties full name and contact number.

Self : Can you elaborate on how you proceed with registration and classification of books?

Librarian : Only 3 data are needed, namely the book reference number, book name and title. But we also keep the author’s name so as to locate the book easily and more quickly. Many students like to read books from the same authors. When new books arrive they are given a reference number and placed on the shelf according to their respective category.

Question 5

Self : How do you proceed to locate and deal with lateness?

Librarian : First we have to go through the cards in the racks and find out who of the members have not returned the books for more than 2 weeks. We keep those cards on a separate rack of overdue members. Then we write the names in the reminders and post it the responsible parties. These reminders are all copies of an original one. Overdue staff members are personally handed the reminders.

Self :Can you tell me how a computer might help you in running your library?
