ENG 102 Instructions for Week 10
Objectives: Students will submit essay 3 by this date. Students will write a formal sentence outline.
Read Lester, Chapter 9i, pp. 146-151, “Writing a Formal Outline.”
View the PowerPoint lesson about writing a sentence outline and look at the example given.
A reminder about what is expected of Essay 3:
From your syllabus:
Essay 3 will require you to present an introduction to your research topic using a minimum of three secondary sources which may include news articles, personal interviews and scholarly articles. The three are not to include Internet sources other than those that have previously been published and are simply archived on the Internet, such as newspaper articles. (You may use Internet sources, but they cannot count as your three required sources. Do not cite Wikipedia articles.) This essay should be 750+ words and include a works cited page.
To further explain what Essay 3 should be about, let me say that you may choose to select just one aspect of your larger research topic and write the essay on that (not necessarily just an introduction of the topic). You may find that easier than simply introducing the topic. Your topic itself will help determine your best choice here. For example, if your topic is on “The Siege and Battle of Vicksburg,” you may write an essay about life in the caves during the siege, or an essay about the impact of the fall of Vicksburg on the outcome of the war, or you may choose to write about Grant’s strategies at Vicksburg. Any one of these would make a good 750 word essay. Then you can later incorporate parts of essay three into your research paper.
