Social Responsibility Efforts

2013 was a really big year for me in regards to giving back to the community. I did the usual when it came to recycling and doing what it took to make my house as energy efficient. Here in the City of Plantation “the grass is greener” (City of Plantation, 2013). We take GO GREEN to another level. We are not required to recycle but it is highly recommended. Trash pickup is done twice a week so you have the opportunity to recycle your trash very often. Utilities are very reasonable because it is encouraged that we use energy efficient light bulbs and appliances. Enough about that though.

In 2013, I gave back in many ways. Being a single mom of two children, you tend to accumulate tons of things. Shoes, clothes, toys, etc. You name it, I have it. I have taught my kids that they have it made because they have so much more than a lot of other kids. Every six months, my kids go through all their toys and give away what they do not need anymore. I also go through their clothes and pack up what does not fit them anymore and always find someone at church who can use it. I gave away at least five tall kitchen size bags of clothes to other single mothers who are less fortunate than I am. While I have the option to just donate to Goodwill and receive a tax write-off, I would rather give it so someone who really needs it and will appreciate it.

One other thing I did this year along with other folks at my community church was the Blankets for the Homeless Project. Many members of our church brought in brand new blankets so that we could deliver them to the homeless for the holidays. Although Florida has bipolar weather from time to time, when the temperate does drop, many homeless people are not prepared for it. We collected over 500 blankets and were able to deliver them Christmas Eve. That for me was a night to remember.

I can go on and on about things that I do that are socially...
