The Dove Campaign for Real Beauty

Nonrealistic, unattainable, fabricated, dishonest and fake are all words that come to mind when I think about how women are portrayed in media advertisements. As technology has rapidly evolved so have the way that women are portrayed in media. Media makes us think we need to be extremely skinny, perfect facial features, flawless hair and excellent skin. This is what kids see everyday as to what they should look like when they look in the mirror. Then in 2004 a new kind of representation of women came out in media. This campaign was from the beauty company Dove and is called The Dove Campaign for Real Beauty. Although what made the biggest impact for is their campaign is commercial called Dove Evolution. In this commercial it shows the process in which companies take to prepare their models for a photo shoot. In the beginning she looks like a normal person you would see walking on the streets. Then after being coated in makeup and hairspray the photos are taken, but it doesn’t stop there. Then they use photo shop to make changes to her body and face to fit the unattainable stereotype media causes. In this paper I will talk about the Dove campaign, how it started and where it is today. In 2006 the Dove Evolution commercial was a major hit for the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty. To show how other girls felt about themselves they started making other advertisements with real women. In this advertisement they took women of all ages and had them work with a sketch artist. To start the advertisement they show an interview with the women that will participate in the activity. They asked the girls what they think they think they should see when they look in the mirror, what they want to change in their facial features and more....
