Routines and Rituals

Everyone has some type of ritual or routine that they do each day to prepare for work. It could be cleaning your monitor, a hard workout, or making coffee, you probably have a routine or ritual you do every morning to get yourself prepared. This routine seems so ordinary and simple, but without it you can’t get started. For me it's like a foundation for the rest of the day.

I start off my pre-work routine with my irritating alarm. It doesn't really matter whether it is set on music or alarm, anything that early is annoying. By early I mean 4 A.M., I press snooze at least once but can never seem to get back to sleep. So, I lay there thinking about the day until right before my alarm goes off, then I get up and turn off Mr. Annoying. When I reach for my glasses I usually knock them onto the floor. Maybe I should just put them on the floor to begin with.

After that fiasco, I'm off to the bathroom. I look into the evil mirror that tells me I'm looking older and older everyday. What does it know, maybe I should look into it after the shower when its all foggy. I brush my teeth to rid myself of the nights foulness. Not too much toothpaste nor too little, but just enough to cover the bristles. I brush while I'm looking in the mirror trying to push the bags that popped out back under my eyes.

I turn on some music, nothing specific the radio does just fine. Not too loud though because my wife and children are still sleeping. I take a shower, usually starting off hot and gradually getting colder. It helps to wake me up when I do it like that. After a shower I warm up my shaving cream with hot water and use a three bladed razor. I can't seem to find an electric shaver that doesn't irritate my skin, so until I do it's the good old razor for me. I dislike shaving quite a bit, but I feel like a new person after doing it. Then I use mouthwash for that minty fresh feeling. I get dressed and go into each one of my kids' rooms to check...
