Question Why are there so few women/men in .... ? Examine the underrepresentation of women/men in an industry of your choice and evaluate how this could be changed.

Introduction

The purpose of this article is to examine how men and women are represented in modern day businesses, specifically the Social Care sector. This Report will examine the ratios of men to women in public care operations and provide Intel as to why this has happened, as well as examine views on why there is a higher population of females working in the care/ support sector than males, but there are less women in Senior Management. It will also explain how gender socialization has developed a stereotype about which gender should work in the Care Sector, for example; it is a common belief that women remain in the role of “supporter/ or carer”, a common stereotype where women appear less valuable than a male. Although in recent times there has been a tremendous burst in workplace equality for both genders, women have still remained the minority within the upper levels of corporations, Research into the FTSE 100, revealed that a minor 12.5% of the 100 board members are in fact women and only five major businesses are managed by a female CEO, (Vinnicombe et al, 2010).;

This can be attributed to barriers within the workplace commonly known as the “Glass Ceiling”. Even if women progress in training, development and aim for the top, few make it.

Why are there so few men in social care & so few women in Senior management

Women working in workplaces usually associated to men was introduced in the 20th century. For example the first time a woman was able to take on a “man’s job” was during the First world war while men were overseas. Forty years later Emmiline Pankhurst and her groups fought and succeeded in getting the women’s right to vote and thus women started fighting for Equal Opportunities in the workplace as well.
