• Assess the effectiveness and efficiency mobile-based applications provide to capture geolocation data and customer data, and quickly upload to a processing server without users having to use a desktop system.

According to ISACA White Pater (2011), Geolocation is defined as:

“is a technology that uses data acquired from an individual’s computer or mobile device (any type of radio or network-connection-enabled device) to identify or describe his/her actual physical location. It is one of the most popular manifestations of the current development of information technologies and is recently experiencing a significant rise in popularity”

The use of this technology is becoming increasingly popular in social media because it gives us the opportunity to show our friends where we are and allow us quickly locate popular or convenient locations near us or even check remotely interest point like restaurant, museum, parks, etc. .

A current example we can mention is the WAZE’s app, where we can locate restaurants, places of interest and using the cellular network via GPS or triangulation will make the route to the place, as below will your position on the map. Thus like a GPS takes you to the site, giving you alternative access routes if you get a problem of access. One advantage is that the maps used are updated in the web application.

Normally current PDAs come with GPS chips integrated that allow the user to maintain the exact position of the device, as long as this is able to receive the GPS signal. Similarly, 2G/3G/LTE cellular networks do allow triangulation via cell towers where you can provide the approximate location of the device.
