5.0 TEAM EFFECTIVENESS MANAGEMENT
One of Madam May May’s subordinates Julia Lim has been appointed as a team leader. This is her first leadership assignment. What advice should Madam May May give Julia in regards to effective team management?
5.1 INTRODUCTION
The meanings of team effectiveness are objective measures of the team’s productivity, managers’ ratings of the team’s performance and aggregate measures of member satisfaction (Robins & Judge 2013, pg 312).
5.2 THEORY
Leadership is the process of providing general direction and influencing individuals or groups to achieve goals (Hitt & Miller 2011, pg 268).The characteristics of effective teams in the team effectiveness model can be divided into 3 general categories which are contextual ,composition and process. The contextual factors mostly refer to team performance includes adequate resources mean the group relies on outside resources to sustain, example: proper equipment, leadership and structure means agreeing on the task and how team fit together to integrate individual skills, climate of trust means team members trust each other, performance evaluation and reward systems meaning evaluating and rewarding for their contributions (Robins & Judge 2013, pg 313).
5.2.1 Next , the ways teams should be staffed is categorize under composition variables such as abilities of members mean capabilities of members for doing a task, personality of members mean personality affects individual behavior, allocation of roles mean allocate task that fit with members’ style, diversity of members mean to which degree members share a common demographic attribute, size of teams mean keeping teams small and member preferences mean managers should consider individual preferences when selecting team members (Robins & Judge 2013 , pg 315).
