Introduction

Data management (DM) is defined by the Data Management Association (DAMA) as, “The development, execution and supervision of plans, policies, programs and practices that control, protect, deliver and enhance the value of data and information assets” (AICPA, 2013). Data Management plays a significant role in an organization’s ability to generate revenue, control costs and mitigate risks. By being able to share, store, protect and retrieve successfully can be a competitive advantage needed to grow in today’s business environment (AICPA, 2013).

In today’s business environment there are many technical aspects and managerial issues that will come with the development of data management in an organization. Technical aspects include the data model and metadata. These are in the effective management keys for business data. Some managerial issues include the data management process, data management policies, data ownership, and data administration. These are key concepts in the data management that will explain how data management is operated.

Importance of Data Management

Systems rely on customers, suppliers, employees, and service providers, but what they rely on more than anything else is data.
