Rana's Wedding Review

First thing I notice was that the Palestinian Film Foundation influenced the creation of the movie “Rana’s Wedding” Second thing I notice is that you hear a little girl most likely Rana herself talking to her mother in the Palestinian language saying “Mama, I’m lost”. The opening credits shows pictures of Rana as a child one by herself, one with her dad, one with her mother, one inside a classroom dressed as a cowgirl, one with her friend, and then its shows one with Rana alone as a grown woman. Then it flashes to a family portrait, after it shows you see the family portrait it shows you Rana at her current age. Rana is inside her bed twisting and turning. You see Rana twisting and turning inside her bed from the perspective view of the family portrait.

During this time you hear a little more about Rana’s past and growing up. First thing you hear about is how Rana was into doing boyish things when she was growing up such as climbing. A quote from the movie “Leave her bed, she has a broken tooth. She climbs trees like a monkey. “After you hear about childhood activities, Rana’s fathers name is provided which is Abu-Ziad and how he is a single parent due to Rana’s mother untimely passing. Rana as a child asks her father the whereabouts of her mother and when she is coming back home. Her father replies by saying “She’ll never come back, when we grow old, we all join her.” During this part of the opening scene a picture of Rana’s parents together are looking and you see through the picture perspective.

Then it goes to a picture of Rana herself and you hear about her father’s ultimatum to her. The ultimatum is to choose a guy from a list of eligible men her father approves of her marrying. If she doesn’t choose one of the men on the list, then she has to leave Jerusalem for Egypt on Tuesday at 4pm. Now the movie really begins and Rana jumps out of bed, she begins to pack a suitcase.
