Ethical Issues in Management

When a company manager interviews applicants for a vacant position at his or her company many considerations need to be reviewed when choosing the best application for the position. In addition to the applicants work experience and work history there may be moral and ethical issues that the manager must be aware of when he or she decides on the best applicant available for the position.

In a perfect world the hiring manager would review resumes received and after the interview process has ended select the candidate who would best fill the need of the company. This decision would be solely on the candidate’s job experience, capabilities, and what he or she can bring to the company to enhance the company’s capabilities. Unfortunately, it is not that easy. When making the decision on whom to hire, managers must ensure that the individual who he or she has selected has not violated any of the company’s ethical hiring practices or possible local or federal legal requirements.

One issue faced by hiring managers is how the hiring manager can contribute to ensuring that the company has a diverse workforce. There are arguments pro and con if hiring a diverse workforce should be a moral and ethical standard. Some may argue that the only requirements should be the individual’s capabilities and that race, gender, or sexual orientation should not be a factor. Other managers and executives argue that by maintaining a diverse workforce the company does not limit itself to only one type of individual. Diversity will also bring different ideas and approaches to the company. In an article written by Peter Kensicki titled “Is hiring for Diversity a Ethical Stand?” this subject is discussed in the insurance industry.
