Polar Bear

Animal world is very diverse and abundant and each region has its specific type of animal. Along the development and the raise in human needs, there are a lot of animals are alert endangered. One of them is polar bear, which is normally found near islands, Artic Ocean. I would like to introduce you about this wonderful mammal and have an overview on their characteristics, diet and population.

Adult male polar bear average weight is about 300 to 800 kg and measure of 2.5m in length from tip of nose to tip of tail. Whereas the average weight of adult female is between 150 to 300 kg with the length of 1.8 to 2m (Gunderson, A 2009). Polar bear is recognized very quickly by the white pelage. Although the pelage is generally white but their fur is not white, it is colorless and hollow, like white hair in humans. Besides, they have a thick layer of fat, about 10cm, to keep them warm.

Because polar bear is one of the carnivorous types so they mostly eat ringed and bearded seals but sometimes, they still eat some other mammals such as beluga whales, walruses, eggs and vegetation. The most interesting thing is they don’t drink water and they get liquids from the animals that they eat (Caleb 2013).

Nowadays, the amount of population of polar bear has been reduced due to the loss of vital sea ice habitat although the estimate of individuals around the world is 20,000 to 25,000 (Polar Bear 2013).

Due to the habitat of the polar bear that they only live near islands and on the Artic Ocean and due to the global warming, the scientist has predicted that the species will soon be extinct.
