What is a personality? Is it what gives our bodies more than just a pretty face? Or is it something that really defines who we are. Personality is defined as “the characteristic patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that make a person unique (Cherry.)” It is something that is built within us and tends to create an image of who we are for the rest of our lives. Now while most people don’t like to relate their personality to what they see at the end of a survey or a quiz they took in a magazine, in reality those results tend to be very true.

In the survey we took as a class, we were examining personality constructs such as individualism, collectivism, tolerance of ambiguity, locus of control and EI, also known as emotional intelligence. Each one of these characteristics is a key part in measuring your self-awareness because each part looks at a different way one handles information given to them. First looking at tolerance of ambiguity, which in easier terms means being able to receive information or someone’s behavior in a neural matter. This personality characteristic is key for workers who train in personality development, management and education because those fields require one to work with all sorts of employees, students and even patients. Now being able to understand and accept someone’s personality and behavior can be easy on someone, but not letting, for one, your own emotions get involved, and two, being able to detect another person’s emotions without them saying a word is what they call having a high emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is ability to perceive, control and evaluate emotions (Cherry.) It is broken off into four sections of perceiving, reasoning, understanding and managing emotions. Many using EI to guide a person’s thoughts and reasoning behind actions to increase social effectiveness.
