Stages of Decision Making

My overall goal for my future has been to accomplish a nursing degree and to later on become a nurse practitioner. I identified a couple of problems that I would run into when it came to reaching this goal. I did not want to drown myself in debt and I knew that, realistically, I would need a couple years of experience right after college to become a nurse practitioner. This led me to one of the biggest decisions that I had to make when it came to my personal and my professional life, deciding whether or not to join the military as my solution.

There were a few things that I had to do before deciding that joining the military was the best decision for my future. First, I think that in the beginning of any big decision it is important to think about what you want the overall outcome to be. I knew that at the end of it all, all I wanted to be was a nurse practitioner so I evaluated this alternative to joining the military by doing my research, talking to recruiters, envisioning myself being in the military, and trying to reach my goal at the same time. I had to piece it of it together to determine if reaching my goal was even feasible while being in the military. It was feasible so I took it a step further.

I then began to determine pros and cons to joining the military. I determined that a few cons would be the scariness of the unknown, being moved from place to place, not knowing anyone every time that I moved, hoping that my coworkers will like me every time I got to a new place. The cons did not outweigh all of the reasons for joining though. When it came to the pros; I knew that I would get my schooling knocked out, I would be saving money, have the discipline from the military under my belt, have experience working in a clinic, leading, and so much more. By this step, I knew that this is what I wanted to do and I knew that it would only help my goals of becoming a nurse practitioner in the future. So I made my decision and implemented...
