1- Understand the process of a counselling skills session

1.1 Identify three stages in the counselling skills session

At the beginning of a counselling skills session you are introducing yourself to the speaker, making a working agreement and letting them know what's on offer. It is important to have an agreement that you able to stick too and what you both agree on. You let them know about time limits "we have 30 minutes today" all about confidentiality what you can keep confidential and what you can't, what it is you do - you are there to help them understand what it is they are going through, not to direct or give advice. If the speaker hasn't had counselling before then you could explain a little bit about what it is and what to expect. The next stage is when the session has begun, the middle. It is now up to the listener to use their skills to help the speaker, the therapeutic relationship is important and the speaker needs to trust you, and you begin to build rapport. You need to identify what is going on for the speaker, recognise their self concept and reflect back to them about feelings, emotions and behaviours that they are talking about to you. Reflecting back to the speaker tells them you hare listening to what they are saying and trying to understand. You need to trust the speaker and engage in the moment with them so you can really feel what is is that's going on for them and be true to them. It's important to use the skills so the speaker feels heard and understood. The final ending stage is closing the session, it's good to let the speaker know when you are nearing the end "ok, we have a couple of minutes left" just so you can summaries the session back to the speaker, checking what you have heard and focusing on the important things that stuck out for you or that you felt was important to the speaker. You can ask if the client has any questions I wants to say anything about what the session was like for them. It shouldn't be a rushed...
