Dear Marty:

You have been a great roommate and one of my best friends since high school. I cherish our friendship dearly, and I hope that it continues far beyond college. We have had some outstanding times so far this year, and I enjoy how you respect me so much. However, there is one thing that you do that has made me a bit annoyed. It bugs me a little how you constantly bring girls back to our room every weekend. I get very little sleep when you do this because you and the girl are usually talking and making a lot of noise, keeping me awake when I want to be sleeping.

This is not a very big deal, but I would appreciate it if we could figure something out to benefit us both. It would be appreciated by me if you would at least give me a warning, because sleep is very important to me. I am not happy when I do not get enough sleep because it makes it hard to get through a full day. The specific incident that forced me to write this letter happened last weekend. I was asleep and you brought a girl back to the room at four in the morning and woke me up, I am sure inadvertently. We need to talk about this situation in a calm, respectful manner which will benefit us both.

I am not going to ask you to stop bringing girls back all together, because that would be selfish on my part. However, I do feel like there are other ways you can go about doing it, so that I do not have to suffer. I have brainstormed three solutions to this conflict in hopes of drawing a win-win conclusion. First, you could tell me if you are going to bring a girl back, so that maybe I can find another place to sleep. Also, you could possibly reduce the number of girls you bring back, but you do not need to stop bringing them back all together. Finally, you could ask the girl if she wants to go back to her room, and then I would not be affected at all. I believe that the latter would be the best solution because...
