Abstract

The sociological perspective can be applied to just about anything that happens in society. Society is a group of people who share a culture and a territory. When looking at social problems and issues that occur within society, we wonder what has caused this, and how it has affected your own family. Many sociologists have paved the way to how we look at sociology – the following core assessment is how exactly these perspectives are applied to society and me.

The idea of the American family (on the outside looking in) seemed too good to be true. Digital history (2006) gives the view of a hard working husband working long hours at the factory; coming home to greetings from a loving family, a home cooked meal prepared by his wife, a clean home, and apple pie sitting in the kitchen window to cool off. The wife’s goal in life is to raise and educate her children, keep her husband happy while off work, and to keep the family together. The goal of the husband is to provide for his family. The children are raised so that they may do the same as the husband and wife, respectively.

Looking at the family institution, a structure is created with each part of the structure bringing something to the table. The American family in the past may have grown their own food (on a farm), educated their off spring, handled their own medical needs, held their own bible studies – basically, rarely having to leave the home for anything. The children would help their mother churn butter, milk cattle, and whatever else needed to be done around the house; just until the male was old enough to help father with the more difficult tasks. As you can see, everyone in the family played some type of role, only dependant on each other.
