Specialty Yarn and Fabrics is a manufacturing company which makes the yarn and fabric that is used in the manufacturing of Good year tires, belts and hoses; Five year ago they were doing their sales and inventory management manually. This created a serious problem because it was a lot harder to keep track of orders. Many shipments arrived late because of the paperwork being misplaced or lost. They had to hire additional personnel in order to keep things in order. They were using Microsoft access as their data management program. It served its purpose at that time. However they were faced with a long series of problems such as security, data duplication, data corruption and unexpected crashes. But what they desired was an enterprise resource planning system. This system needed to be capable of handling various aspects such as sales, delivery, human resources, production, inventory management and database management.

At the plant, there were several people who relied heavily on data as a part of their day to day operation. Since they were doing things manually; any mistakes on the paperwork can cost the company thousands of dollars. The main purpose of the plant was to treat and cut fabric. The fabric was actually manufactured at another plant located 40 miles away. Whenever an order is placed, the fabric is transported to the plant. The roll of fabric is mounted to the machinery known as the Treater. It is feed through the machine by a person known as the Let-off operator. It is his duty to insure that the fabric is treated with the correct chemical. Then the fabric is fed through an oven at 400 degrees Fahrenheit. The person on the other end of the Treater known as the take-up operator rolls up the treated fabric. He then tags the roll and transports it to the Slitter operator.
