- Comments on Yahoo (Marissa):

I was not surprised by Yahoo’s decision on ending the telecommuting for its employees. In fact, I stand the same side with Marissa, the CEO of Yahoo who is trying to rebuild Yahoo’s culture of communication and collaboration. From the business point of view, Yahoo is no longer the industry leader. According to Yahoo’s annual report in recent years, it’s continuous trend of profit losing making Yahoo hard to compete with its competitors. As the CEO of the organization, Marissa representing the senior management team is playing an important role as of “Organizational Change Agent”. Being the change agent, she needs to understand the cause and implications of challenges the organization is facing and has the courage to drive the changes. Working at home may not be the key reason for Yahoo’s unsatisfactory business performance, but if Yahoo expects to go on the innovation and implement its new business strategy for the sake of changing the passive situation, it does need its people around so that the positive organizational climate can be fostered and reinforced.

“Organizational culture is the core values, beliefs, and assumptions that are widely shared by members of an organization (Dessler etc., 1942) “. It is the culture that shapes the internal operations of organizations and has significant impact on talent acquisition, talent management, and productivity. According to Yahoo’s practice, the concept of culture is particularly important when attempting to manage organization-wide change.

Beside organizational culture, we can also learn the leadership lesson from this business case. The senior management can play an important role as “Organizational Change Agents.” They understand the cause and implications of business frustration can take risk to steer the change projects.
