Different Approaches to Teaching and Designing Curriculum for Preschoolers

Every educator has a specific philosophies and approaches to teaching. Our approach to teaching is generated from numerous resources and in all probability includes: knowledge from early childhood theorists, knowledge of child development, and our participations with children in various learning environments. Choosing a preschool curriculum is an important decision because how you implement it, affects the outcomes for children.

Children at the Pre K to K start school between the ages of 3-5 depending on the program and school children are attending. For my final paper, I will identify and discuss the theories and/or philosophies that demonstrate how I envision the appropriate classroom for preschool age group. I will also provide an overview of the concepts I will teach in each academic area, and offer some of the strategies and activities that will be implemented in the classroom which will be a reflection of the theories that comprise my philosophy of education. Lastly will describe how the teaching strategies correlate with the National Association for the Education of Young Children Standards and the state of Mississippi standards.

Lesson plans for preschoolers have to be designed with the sole needs of young children in mind. Preschool aged children between 3-5 years will normally have short attention spans. Breaking the material up into small sections is imperative to keeping them focused and engaged. At this age the learning experience is designed to teach basic skills.
