Introductory Memo

Introduction

Writing has always been something that has connected with me. From an early age, I was

always scribbling something down on a piece of paper and handing it to my mom or dad to read.

As I grew as a person, I found that writing was my release, my creative medium. I would write

to work out tough situations, make important decisions, and most importantly, to relax. However,

when it comes to professional writing, I am a little less confident. I feel that I have spent so much

time writing creatively, that I may have fallen behind in standard, professional writing skills. This

is why this class, Writing in Workplace Genres, appealed to me so much. I feel that it is going to

give me exposure in various fields that I have never been exposed to or am not comfortable with.

I am excited for this semester and the opportunity this class is giving me to expand and refine my

skills as a professional writer.

My Background

My name is Tanner Elrod and I am currently a Junior here at Northern Kentucky

University. I am an English Major with a Double Minor in Pre-Law and Honors with an Area of

Concentration in Political Science. I am originally from a small town in Southern Kentucky called

Gamaliel. It is named after a prophet in the Bible and my hometown is the polar opposite of the

metropolitan area around Cincinnati. I came to NKU looking for a change in scenery, and I

happened to find a place that I love, my new home. While I don’t consider myself and extremely

“off-the-wall” person, there are a few interesting things about me.
