Part I: Statistical Measures
| Body Fat | Weight |
Mean | 18.938 | 178.924 |
Median | 19 | 176.5 |
Range | 45.1 | 244.65 |
Standard deviation | 7.751 | 29.389 |
The importance of finding the mean/median is:
The mean and median are measures of central tendency of data. Mean and median provide important information regarding the expected value from the data.
The mean is the sum of all the numbers in the data set, divided by the amount of numbers in the set. And, the mean is more meaningful than the median when interested in the average value than the middle value.
The median is the middle point of the numbers in the data set (with half the numbers above and half the numbers below the median).
To find the median salary or middle value of where salaries fall? I would use the median average of the total salaries to find the middle point or middle average salary range.
The importance of finding the range/standard deviation is:
The importance of knowing the standard deviation provides another method for you to measure how close together the elements are in a certain data set. Also knowing the standard deviation informs you of the average distance between each data point and the mean. Knowing the standard deviation provides a more complete picture of the distribution of elements in the given data set. Range and standard deviation also provides an idea regarding the dispersion, or variability in the data. The higher the values, the higher the values differ from the central tendency of the data.
Part II: Hypothesis Testing
Null hypothesis (Claim average body fat % in men attending Silver’s gym is 20), therefore, Ho: u=20
Alternative hypothesis (Claim average body fat % in men attending Silver’s gym isn’t 20), therefore, H1 is equal to or less than 20
