Mr. Keenan The Duel for North America

1. Why was the French empire ultimately so much less successful than either the Spanish or the British empires? – The French were late to settle into the new world. During the 1500’s the Roman Catholics and Protestant Huguenots were fighting each other. Over ten thousand men and women were killed. Then the Edict of Nantes was issued so there was a limited toleration to the French Protestants.

2. If France instead of Britain had won the “duel for North America,” would the thirteen colonies ever have become independent of Britain, or would they have been forced to stay within the empire for protection against France? I think that the Britain would have had them stay within the empire for protection against France. France was becoming allies with as many Indian tribes as possible in order to make their army stronger. Many people were killed when the French attacked Schenectady, New York.

3. How did the treatment of Americans by British officers and military during the war contribute to simmering resentment against the “mother country”? American soldiers were treated really poorly. Some of them were executed others were held in terrible conditions.

4. How important was William Pitt’s leadership in winning the Seven Years’ War?

William Pitt played a big role in the seven year war. When Braddock couldn’t handle Pitt had to come in and finish it off. William Pitt was commonly known as the “Great Commoner.” William Pitt was also really good with the common people. The battle of Quebec wouldn’t have been won if it hadn’t been for Pitt.
