In recent news, Celebrities Photo Leak Puts Spotlight On The Cloud, And Security. However over the years, there has been a debate about whether data in the cloud is more secure than data that’s housed on an organization’s premises. Despite recurring cloud security breaches, the number of government agencies and Private Corporation moving to the cloud is higher than ever. Discuss your views on the following: Should organizations move to and invest in the cloud?

Cloud is a style of computing where scalable and elastic IT-related capabilities are provided as a service to external customers using Internet technologies (Gartner, 2010). Cloud can be deployed in four ways: Private Cloud, Community Cloud, Hybrid Cloud and Public Cloud. This paper will focus on Public Cloud which is the one that is at most risk of security breaches. Public Cloud is defined by NIST (2011) as infrastructure which is provisioned for open use by the general public. It may be owned, managed, and operated by a business, academic, or government organization, or some combination of them. The underlying infrastructure exists on the premises of the Cloud provider.

Since the introduction of Cloud Computing, many concerns have been raised as to whether data is more secure in the Cloud than data that is housed on an organization’s premises. These concerns have increased over the years and more recently with the Celebrity Photo Leak in which hackers gained access to private photos which were housed in the Cloud. Despite recurring Cloud security breaches, Cohen (2013) reports that the number of government agencies and private corporations moving to the Cloud is higher than ever with more than half of US Businesses already using the Cloud.
