Healthy People 20/20

Healthy People offer science–centered goals and objectives nationwide with a ten years target intended to promote national health and prevent spread of diseases to improve health conditions of all people in the United States (Hales, 2013). The program is designated to monitor progress of people over time while increasing public awareness in local, state and national levels on the ways to achieve a healthy life.

Brief History of the Healthy People Program

Health People is a nationwide program established by the Department of Health and Human Services whose goal is to promote health and prevent spread of diseases in the United States (Hales, 2013). The program was founded in 1979, and underwent subsequent updates into Healthy People 1990, to Healthy People 2000 and finally to Healthy People 2010. These updates focus to improve goals set in the previous years. For instance, Healthy People program established in 2010 improved efforts of the other programs established in 1979, 1990 and 2000 (Rippe, 2013). Evident to this, the Healthy People goal of 2000 aimed at decreasing health disparities was further strengthened by Healthy People program of 2010 whose aim was to eliminate these health disparities. The goal of Healthy People 2010 was further improved by Healthy People 2020 whose aim is to eradicate health disparities, realize health equity and expand health for all people in the United States (Hales, 2013).
