Letter to the Editor on Teenage Pregnancy

I am writing in response to Raquel Reichard’s 8 Lies We Need to Stop Spreading About Teen Pregnancy article in Identiites.Mic. It is such an opportunity to read an article that reflects on reality and not just what people might want to hear. Not every pregnancy are the same and not every teen pregnancy end up with such a sad story. From my personal experience, a child future is determine by not only their parent’s decision but also their own. The media showcase lies by exaggerating the facts and making it seem as if majority of the teen pregnancy are due to lower class not being well educated.

First, it is a stressful situation to take care of a child at such a young age, and many teenage parents do have a support system from family and friends where they can turn to for help. Not all teenage parent are left out to survive on their own and have to learn to survive. Different people have different way of asking for help. Some teenager might want to try to do it all by their self before asking for help, while some will seek help right away. As Raquel Reichard stated “new mom is "reminded" that her pregnancy or baby has "robbed" her of her social life.” (Reichard,2014) Which might be true to some, but to other’s it’s a reality check where they realize that they are not a child anymore. Bring a baby into this world whether your old or young, it’s the best feeling ever.

From my personal experience as young mom, I never once blamed my children for the lack of social life I have instead, I am actually thankful to have them in my life. Without them, I would not have the drive to go to college and see the potential I have to provide for them. Yes it was hard in the beginning because I was also a baby myself when I had my first son but is it really any different if I was in my mid 20’s when I had my fist.
