Unit 5 Assignment: Occupational Safety and Health

In 1970, Congress enacted the Occupational Safety and Health Act which created OSHA. The mission of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration or OSHA is to help employers and employees reduce injuries, illnesses and death on the job by providing training, outreach and education assistance. With doing this, it decreases the cost employers have to payout such as workers compensation insurance cost and expenses. Workplace deaths have been cut by more than 60 percent and injuries and illnesses have declined by 40 percent since 1970. OSHA promotes workplace safety and health by completing worksite inspections, supply new and improved safety and health management systems, and develop training programs for occupational safety and health personnel. Employees that are not covered under OSHA are the self employed, immediate family of farm workers, state and local government employees, and federal agencies that have their own safety or health requirements.

It is very important that organizations comply with the standards of OSHA. Employers are responsible for keeping up to date with standards as well as making sure their employers are up to date as well. This ensures safety of the company and its employers. For many years standards remain the same but time to time there are changes and added regulations that organizations need to stay current with. There are paid resources and free resources that are helpful in keeping you current with OSHA regulations. Paid updating services are best but there are free resources available usually provided online. One must understand state and federal regulations, because they may differ. It’s good to also appoint a staff member to create a plan for employee safety and training.
