Thesis: Media influences Americans views on social and political issues, just as media in 1984 controlled the Party member’s thoughts.

In American culture and society, ideas of sex and sexual image are constantly on display. It is a common notion that “sex sells” which means that any product involving a sexual image or idea will make a high profit. Pornography is “printed or visual material containing the explicit description or display of sexual organs or activity, intended to stimulate erotic rather than aesthetic or emotional feelings”. It is a three billion dollar industry in the United States alone. Sixty eight percent of young men and eighteen percent of young woman use porn at least once a week. Pornography usage has been turned into a norm because it is so popular and easily available. In America, most people also view porn as harmless. In 1984, there was a writing department called “Pornosec” which, “turned out cheap pornography for distribution among the proles” (130). In the Party’s standards, this porn is considered filth and is forbidden for distribution among Party members. The character Julia, who is considered sexually corrupted and promiscuous, does not find the porn interesting at all. Pornography viewing was forbidden from Party members because it would possibly spark sexual desires and in turn, evolve into emotional feelings. In American society, porn is meant for the sole purpose of arousal and all emotional feelings are avoided when it comes to sex as portrayed in the media.

In an article titled, “Sexualization of Girls Teaches Boys to Be Sexually Violent”, by Rachel Bell captures how women are used and portrayed as sex objects in the media. Bell stresses, “The Psychological Associations findings- that the portrayal of girls and young woman as sex objects harms girls mental and physical health- should be addressed at the root cause: the media. Powerful and profit driven, they are left to self-regulate with their own voluntary codes”...
