The 4 principles of Nonverbal Communication are 1. Supplements or replaces verbal communication 2. Regulates interaction 3. Establishes relationship- level meanings (responsiveness, liking, power ) 4. Reflects & expresses culture value.

Non- verbal communication is the use of gestures, facial expressions and other non- audible expressions to transmit a message. The verbal part includes the actual words we use in a message. The vocal part is the tone or reflection we place on those words. The entire message changes if we use a sarcastic tone rather than a sincere tone. The non-verbal part of the message includes the physical aspects- facial expressions, gestures, posture, eye contact--- that are used.

Regulating interaction is a term that refers to speakers’ efforts to construct a reasonably orderly flow of conversation. This is accomplished through an elaborate system of turn taking and yielding behaviors, conveniently consolidated by Patterson (1990). When a listener is about to attempt to take a turn as speaker, s/he may exhibit some or all of the following behaviors: an audible inhalation, the initiation of gesture, over loudness in the first segments of speech; (Patterson, 1990, p.108). there are times that interactions simply must be regulated.

Nonverbal communication is anyway that is used to express thoughts, feelings, or emotions without speaking. The human body is extremely susceptible to this type of communication as 80% of the messages we send and receive are done so without ever saying a word. Nonverbal communication skills are a vital part of our everyday lives. 55% of messages received and processed ny your brain are based on your body language. 38% of messages are processed based on your tone of voice. Only 7% of your received meaning will be based off the words you are saying.
