Conflict is a process between two or more people where one person does something negative to another person or something negative has been done toward something or someone the person cares about. These disagreements or conflicts in an emergency department can be interpersonal conflicts stemming from multiple demands on the job that cannot be carried out. Such as two or more critical patients on one assignment and the charge nurse is not helping due to her interaction on social media or being out of the department doing things unrelated to work. This leaves the staff nurse with the patient assignment feeling like no one cares about her, her patients, or the well being of either. When patients are critical and the nurse is overloaded on her assignment, without help from others, this could also lead to greater exhaustion, a higher rate of burnout, and a decrease in organizational commitment. (Leiter & Maslach, 1998)

Work stress and work conflict run together. Stress is when there is an opportunity or demand on an individual that the result is uncertain. (Robbins & Judge, 2009) These stressors can arise from conflicts in the workplace that leaves the employee feeling overwhelmed. Some stress can be good; it can cause people to accept the challenge and to perform to the best of their ability. But when employees are emotionally exhausted by their work, having thoughts of lack of achievement, having depersonalizing views of the people they work with or work for, they become less dedicated to work, emotionally and physically, and withdraw from their job. This can lead to increased absenteeism and turnover in the work place.
