Boeing Configurator

This paper will dive into three aspects of software: applications software, application design, and software design. I will briefly explain each of the terms mentioned, followed by an example of how the engineers at Boeing design and develop software applications to create a better, faster, or less expensive designs. So let’s get started on the explanation of the three terms I mentioned about at the beginning of this paper, the first being applications software.

Applications software as define by Marakas & O’Brain is a program that carries out programmed activity required to complete a specific computer task. An example of a computer application would be iTunes which is used for viewing videos and playing music among other features. Application design involves gathering and interrupting a business function. Once the information is gathered, an application solution is generated to meet the businesses requirements. The last term is software design, implements software based solutions for a particular problem. For instance, let’s say an individual has a difficult time waking up to an alarm clock. To correct this problem, a software routine coupled with some sort of hardware, could turn on the lights in their bedroom to wakes them up. Now that we have a basic understanding of these terms, the next thing to do is to explore their usage with in Boeings Configurator computer application.

To be able to develop a safe, reliable and cost efficient aircraft would require extensive time and resources. Boeing designs and well as builds both commercial and military aircraft. By doing so they are always looking for a competitive edge in their market; this might possibly be where the application Configurator comes into play. According to Boeing, the Configurators main goal is to assist the engineers with concise and efficient development and designs of aircraft purchases by customers. The Boeing Configurator is designed to gather the following...
