W2 Q1 What are some of the issues inherent in managing data? What methods may be used to identify data management issues? As a manager, how would you propose such issues be resolved?

The importance of data should be accurate, complete, timely, accessible and concise. But keeping data current and managing it has become difficult, therefore some of the issues that managing data faces are not enough storage, accessibility and the new data being added too quick from sources such as blogs, podcasts, videocasts, or wireless sensors. As a manager my approach to indentifying these problems would to use the database methods listed in chapter 4, Data and knowledge Management. The database approach would help eliminates storing and accessing data problems and provide users with easy access:

1. Data Isolation: Data is held in a position that changes to the structure of the database do not affect the programs used to access the data. This would promote data accuracy.

2. Data Redundancy: Information may be held on several files and makes updating more time-consuming. The method would eliminate “historical data” sitting there and wasting space.

3. Consistency of Data: Each item of data is enter only once and can be updated on one system and not on another. The method is useful for unify data management.

Q2 What is the relationship amongst data, information, and knowledge? What are the advantages of a knowledge management system? How may a knowledge management system enhance productivity?

Data is a collective of distinct measurement of facts or events. Data is also known as unprocessed information. Information is the resulted from data collection. Data becomes useful or meaningful information. Knowledge is the application of experience, jurisdiction or judgment to the information. Knowledge is the result of learning the information.
